SACRIFICE THE BOASTER
I’m going to switch my attention to the inner person, my inner person. I’m going to, twenty-four hours of the day, find out what I am doing inside.
And then I remember the man giving the talk used the word sacrifice and I’m going to try it. I’m going to go to work. I’m going to find that statement I made to someone which was a falsehood, and I’m going to find out the reason I said that, that boasting statement. “Well I’m an independent thinker, nobody tells me how to think,” all that.
The next time you see that, you’re to remember this talk and you’re to realize that you said it because you’re unsure of yourself, and you therefore repeated for the ten thousandth time the statement, “I know what I’m doing,” and I said to the other person in my own words, Never mind, I thought this out. This is how we should do this; here is how we should vote, here is how we should spend our money.
I can’t believe, this is your awakening self talking, I can’t believe there was nothing inside of me but a stupid braggart and now I know that the stupid braggart was also the same person as the sick and scared person inside of me. I see how the whole thing is one gigantic mess.
I am going to dare in spite of all opposition inside myself, I’m going to sacrifice my most familiar boast and brag in trying to make myself seem important to myself and to others. I’m going to identify it.
I instruct you all to listen to yourself talk. This is a week-long exercise in itself. Notice the physical part of it, you talk fast or slow, high voice, low voice, whatever, and then go on to the question, “Why did I say that?”
Tell the truth! The reason you boasted is because you thought you had to. You thought you had to talk about yourself.
ARE YOU AT PEACE?
You like to repeat religious phrases. You like to quote teachers of the past, and you like to think that it has something to do with you. Look, come on, if you were really saved, if you really lived in and with the Holy Spirit, if you really did that, wouldn’t you be at peace? Are you at peace? No, you’re at war.
Now I am trying to force you to stop telling lies. It ain’t easy! [Laughter] Because your dream castle is built of enormous fabrications, and you don’t want to obey anything higher than yourself. Because you think, in your sick egotism, that there is nothing higher than you.
