New Strength
See repetition, the familiar, the usual, all that tricks you into thinking you have permanence. Ah, hah! But also notice how you can’t believe in your favorite phonograph records, your favorite books, your favorite quotations, your favorite memories.
You go into the average home and there is nothing but miserable memories. The pictures on the wall, the autograph books, the class yearbook; anything that can evoke a memory becomes a false security. I'm not against putting pictures on the wall. Put one of a nice waterfall, for example, and then don’t want to own the waterfall. (Laughter)
Miserable Memories
There is a very interesting true story, this is true. There was a man who wanted to buy a certain set of books, fifteen or twenty books that came together in a box, so he called the company and they sent out a salesman. The salesman came out, brought the box of books in, set them on the floor, and they talked a little bit. And the salesman, instead of opening the books, sat there for a while and talked to the man who had ordered them and the salesman was telling him all sorts of future involvements with the book company.
He was telling him that in six months, you’ll be able to get a fifty percent discount over the other books we publish and a year from now, we’ll be sending you literature, which will entitle you to certain coupons where you can get certain breaks in buying books, and the salesman went on and on and on.
And the man did something, which I want you to do, applying the story to your particular life. All of a sudden, the man said, “Hold everything please, just a minute, I want to ask you just one question. The one question is, if you leave the books here, how much money do you want for those books? I want to buy these books and that’s it.” Of course the salesman didn’t like that, it broke his con game, but how many are as smart as that? No hands. How many want to be as smart as that?
All right, only the spirit of wisdom, the truth itself, will give you the smartness. Let’s use common words. Just sit back and listen to the con games being played on you, left and right by the whole world. That’s how they live, and you’re not going to go along with it anymore.
Look, if you want something out in the world, ask the price and get out of there. If you’re in a relationship with someone else, understand that relationship and don’t worry. You see, we always complicate things....
Remember the salesman story where right in the middle of the sales pitch, the scheme, right in the middle of it, the man held up his hands and said, "Wait, just a minute, enough of that. What’s the price of the books?" Let’s pay it and get it over with. You have to be that firm, you have to know that you can have a strength that you don’t now possess.
Man and Medicine
Feeling ill and weak one day, a man believed he had caught the sickness of some of his neighbors. Slowly making his way to a doctor, the man requested, “Please prescribe some medicine for my neighbors.”
“But what about you?” asked the physician.
“No, no, you do not understand,” insisted the man as he wearily fell into a chair. “It is my neighbors who are sick.”
The man with the illness is the man who needs the medicine.

How to End Suffering on Depression
The commentary series below is focused on a particular negative emotion, painful feeling, negative trait or state of human beings that causes us tremendous pain and suffering. Perhaps you will recognize that you yourself have had personal experience with this condition. You’ll find the explanation of how it causes suffering and how it produces detrimental effects in your daily life. You will also be shown how Truth can help you to lessen these effects and how you can eventually eliminate them from your life altogether. A new negative characteristic of human nature will be gone into each month. It will be great fun to explore these things in order to help us see through them and to be rid of them.
DEPRESSION by Tom Geiger
Often people have vivid and grand expectations of achievement. Then they encounter failure, and travel into despair, misery, and suffering. Self-doubt, creeping in at this point, can easily increase this painful journey into a state of depression. This is when some people will tend to withdraw, thinking that is the best way to escape from the pain. The last thing most people want to do is to study their pain. The typical knee-jerk response under these circumstances only makes things worse. They spend their entire lives running these painful scenarios through their minds, hoping for the right solution and/or different outcome. They are caught by reality and go directly back to relive and re-experience the suffering. The tormenting movies run over and over and over in the mind. And many people like nothing better than to share the misery, telling their bad luck stories to anyone who will listen.
In the Mystic Path to Cosmic Power Vernon Howard writes in chapter 7, entitled “How To Stop Heartache and Suffering, “We don’t want temporary relief. We want to end it once and for all.” He further says, “The false self throws up an imaginary picture of how it insists things should be. And every time this should be clashes with what actually happens, we react painfully.”
In his booklet, Conquer Anxiety and Frustration, Vernon explains that the blockage of unnecessary desires is the basic cause of human frustration. And when human frustration is indulged in for too long, it’s inevitably followed by a state of discontent and depression. This is one of my favorite booklets, in part because his classification of desires into necessary ones and unnecessary ones is so explanatory and enlightening. Necessary desires include the need for food, shelter, rest, recreation. Unnecessary desires are hoping for the promotion, for more money or the date with a beautiful woman, longing to win the lottery, or the argument. It is your task to watch “these desperate cravings of the false self as they start to arise” and to separate from them by realizing you are not your false self. There is no reason to be depressed, because there is no true entity inside to be depressed!
I recently read a biography of Jesse Livermore, a famous American stock trader. He lost everything: THREE TIMES! He was engulfed by severe depression each time, coming out of this torture by rationalizing that it was just part of his education. His was literally a rags to riches story, running away from home at 14, and promptly finding a job on Wall Street. He had two million dollars in his account by the time he was 20 years old and at the pinnacle of his career was one of the wealthiest men in the world. He made it to this level by shorting the stock market right before the 1929 market crash. But in the end, his depression got the best of him.
It didn’t need to. These teachings put everything in the right perspective and prepare you for any kind of what is typically called a ‘loss.’ You can learn how to change every failure into genuine success by using the experience to grow spiritually. There is a way out!
