BEING INSTEAD OF DOING
Being something comes before doing something. Human beings are obsessed with doing — with quantity instead of quality. And they say to themselves in bewilderment, in the midst of all their doing: “I know that I am supposed to be earning my living. I’m supposed to be taking care of my life in general, but what am I supposed to be doing with myself?” And you watch yourself ask that: what am I supposed to be doing with this so-called “me” here? Let me tell you what you are supposed to be doing with it — you’re supposed to be growing in graciousness and knowledge of the Supreme Spirit.
... Most everyone scorns the water of life. How many love the water of life? Love it more, and it will be so easy to not get entangled with the dreary, sick affairs of this world. You will indeed get up in the morning and you will be eager in a new way not to score that business victory, not to find some way to push away your concealed angers. But you’ll get up and the first thing you will think about is to know that you have your Father’s work to do.
And why does He give us this work? Because He knows it is what we need in order to grow in the spirit, to grow in knowledge and graciousness of what life is truly all about. So much work to be done. Let me emphasize that point for a minute. You can’t go out of this room and go back to your old ways. STOP IT.
HOW TO BE TRULY BRAVE
You’re going to be very, very brave without having your reason for the bravery. You don’t need a reason for it. You just have to do it. True bravery is being brave when you haven’t the slightest idea of what it means.
You now identify your so-called courage. “I can be pretty tough with people when I want to be.” That’s your identification of what a great hero you are. And then you go ahead and make yourself triply nervous, more nervous than you were before, by fighting them.
... Let’s see the nervous wrecks in the room. Everyone raise your hand. In order to get rid of your nerves, you do a nervous thing, and get three times as nervous as you were before. Dare to not be brave according to your own mis-definitions of what it means to be brave. Instead of trying to be strong and fighting a terrible world, instead of being strong, you just obey instructions.
